MCA History Taking a Challenge – Eric Sevareid

Posted by Lada Zednik on Mar 11, 2026, 7:19 p.m.

As part of the Minnesota Canoe Association’s 60th anniversary celebration, we are sharing articles from past issues of HUT, the MCA newsletter.

This piece appeared in the March 1983 issue and was written by Eric Sevareid, author of Canoeing with the Cree. In 1930, Sevareid and his friend Walter Port paddled from the Twin Cities to York Factory on Hudson Bay.

In this reflection, written more than fifty years later, Sevareid describes how that youthful adventure inspired others to take on their own journeys into the wilderness.
