About Minnesota Canoe Association

Building Community Through Canoeing

The MCA promotes education, racing, and exploration — uniting paddlers who share a passion for Minnesota’s waters.

Who We Are

The Minnesota Canoe Association (MCA) is a community of paddlers dedicated to promoting the joy, fitness, and adventure of canoeing across Minnesota and beyond. Founded in 1966 and incorporated as a nonprofit corporation in the State of Minnesota, the Minnesota Canoe Association has grown from a small group of passionate paddlers into a vibrant statewide community.

We welcome paddlers of all ages and skill levels—from beginners learning their first strokes to seasoned racers competing at the highest levels.

We believe that canoeing is more than a sport—it’s a way to connect with nature, build lifelong friendships, and strengthen our communities.

Our History

The Minnesota Canoe Association, Inc. was founded in 1966 when a small group of paddlers, including Betty and Karl Ketter and Eugene Jensen, came together to promote canoe racing, craft, and exploration.

In its early years, MCA members designed and shared canoe plans, built boats, organized races, and connected through the newsletter HUT!, helping shape Minnesota’s modern paddling culture.

Over the decades, MCA expanded to support a wide range of paddling interests, including whitewater, sea kayaking, voyageur cruising, and recreational touring. What began as a racing-focused group evolved into a welcoming, statewide community dedicated to learning, competition, and connection on the water.
