As we look ahead to another paddling season, it is worth remembering that the foundation of our Rookies program has been strong for decades.

This article, published in a 1985 issue of The Hut, offers advice to new paddlers entering the world of canoe racing. Forty years later, the message still rings true.

The piece lays out the core philosophy behind Rookies. It emphasizes that success in canoe racing is not about strength alone, but about skill developed over time on the water. It reminds paddlers to focus on learning rather than competing with their partner, and to pay attention to the many small details that make a canoe move well.

It also highlights something that continues to define the program today. Every partner brings a different style, different knowledge, and a different approach. Learning comes from experiencing those differences and gradually building your own understanding.

The range of skills mentioned is just as relevant now as it was then. Boat control, river awareness, wind, trim, pacing, and teamwork all play a role. None of it comes quickly, and that is part of the process.

Rookies was never meant to be a complete training program. It is an introduction, a place to learn fundamentals, build confidence, and become part of the paddling community.

Forty years later, that same spirit continues. Each spring, new paddlers show up, experienced racers volunteer their time, and the cycle begins again.

If you are new, come learn.
If you are experienced, come teach.
And if you have been around a while, come back. You are part of this story too.
